Through the Looking Glass
A portrait of the psychological interior: a disquieting personal commentary.
Moments of transition on the journey from girl to womanhood: exciting and yet traumatic: the exploration of the rites and rituals of young girls on the cusp of change.
These images provide an insight into this cusp, and create a relationship between the viewer and the subjects as they prepare to embark on a journey into the unknown, where childhood will soon be left behind. A natural environment is the stage, which reflects all aspects of life, from birth to death, dominated by cycles such as seasonal and lunar. It is set in an age where innocence has been replaced by an anxiety to achieve and perform and where peers have replaced parents.
An enormous amount of how we produce images relates to our own childhood experiences. These images show the communicative power of the human face and body posture enabling us to see the psychological interior aswell as the girls exterior.
"A portrait then, must reveal the person beneath the mask and include qualities beyond appearance, another dimension of psychological resonance". Max Kozloff
